Playground Renovation Project

On Friday April 28, 2017, Community of Peace Academy will be building a brand new playground with the support of KaBOOM! and Target. It will replace CPA’s current playground, which is outdated and in need of repair, and it will include an additional 1000+ square feet of playground equipment, plus a separate adjoining space with adult fitness equipment. This is a major investment in our school and in our neighborhood community! It is hard to imagine how an entire playground can be built in such a short amount of time; take a look at this time-lapse video of another group doing just what we will be doing!

KaBOOM! and Target are working together to increase active play for kids nationwide. KaBOOM! is one of the non-profits Target has chosen to support in efforts to make it easier for families and kids to get the physical activity they need. KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America.

With community volunteers, KaBOOM! and Target team members will help 26 low-income neighborhoods to design, plan and build new playgrounds—including Community of Peace Academy!

Target has been a sponsor of the Play Everywhere Challenge, a national competition aiming to empower cities to turn every day spaces – sidewalks, vacant lots, bus stops, open streets and beyond – into play areas that encourage more families to get active and play together.

Play is a powerful thing that transforms children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally, and socially active. Play can address obesity, improve mental health and wellness and help build family bonds.

Play activities help children create, explore, solve, and imagine—which helps their brain develop, builds important creative thinking and problem-solving skills, and contributes to emotional well-being.

It takes a lot of people to complete a project of this size in such a short amount of time! We are looking for many volunteers from the CPA community who can help us make this dream a reality.

Wednesday, April 26, 2017: Prep Day 1

On Prep Day 1, we need 40 volunteers who can help us organize materials, prepare equipment, and complete tasks such as cutting lumber, so that everything we will need on Build Day is ready to go.

Thursday, April 27, 2017: Prep Day 2

On Prep Day 2, we need 15 volunteers who can help us complete any tasks that did not get finished on Prep Day 1.

Friday, April 28, 2017: Build Day

On Build Day, we need 100 volunteers from the CPA community who can help us put the playground together! We will be joined by 150 volunteers from our Funding Partner, Target, and we will build the entire playground in one day!

Volunteers must be 18 or older. Anyone who is able to volunteer should contact the playground committee at or call Ms. Fischer at 651-280-4564.

If you are interested in donating to support this playground renovation, we could use your help in one of these ways:

Donate money

All money donated will go toward the cost of the playground, site preparation, rental of equipment, and supplies for our volunteers (food, water, etc). You can donate online HERE, or contact Ms. Fischer at 651-280-4564 to donate via cash or check.

Donate Gifts-In-Kind

CPA will be providing beverages and food for all of the volunteers—and this will be a big undertaking, with 250 people on site for Build Day! We will be relying on businesses or generous individuals to help us with this. If you are interested in donating food or beverages, or if you have a connection to a business that may be willing to help us with this, please call Ms. Fischer at 651-280-4564 or email the playground committee at Gift cards for businesses that sell food are also helpful!
